How much bandwidth you actually need for a cam call — and how to test yours

A one-to-one video call is one of the lightest things a modern connection does. Video calling in general is comfortable at one to two megabits each way, and around three is plenty for a sharp picture — considerably less than one person streaming a film in the next room. The catch is that speed is only one of four numbers, and it is rarely the one that ruins your call. Upload, latency, jitter and packet loss all get blamed on "slow internet" and only one of them is speed. Below are the twelve things worth knowing, ending with a test you can run in about a minute before your next cam call.

Upload is the half everyone forgets

A video call sends your face out as well as pulling theirs in, so your upload figure matters exactly as much as the download one people quote. Home connections are usually built the other way round, with generous download and a thin upload lane, which is why your picture can look worse to them than theirs does to you. When you check anything, check upload first.

The rough numbers for a one-to-one call

As a rule of thumb across video calling in general, around half a megabit each way is enough for a watchable picture, one to two megabits each way is comfortable, and three or so gives you a sharp one-to-one image. Past that, extra speed does very little for a two-person call — it buys you room for other devices, not a better face. This is far less than most people assume they need.

Your speed figure is a ceiling, not a promise

The number on your bill is the best case for one device on a quiet line, and the internet does not sell it to you in guaranteed slices. Evenings, shared buildings and busy cells all shave real throughput below the headline, and the same line can test near its full rate in the afternoon and a fraction of it at nine at night. Plan for the worst hour you actually call in, not the number in the advert.

Latency decides whether it feels like a conversation

Latency is the delay between you speaking and them hearing it, and it is a completely separate thing from speed. Under about 150 milliseconds a call feels normal; up past 300 and two people start talking over each other and apologising in loops. A fast connection with terrible latency feels worse than a slow one with good latency.

Jitter is why voices turn robotic

Jitter is the variation in arrival time between packets — the difference between a steady stream and a stuttering one. Audio is unforgiving about it because your ear notices a missing tenth of a second instantly. If people sound like they are talking through a fan, jitter is the first suspect, not bandwidth.

A little packet loss goes a long way

Around one percent loss is already visible as small freezes and smeared frames, and five percent makes a call genuinely unpleasant. Loss usually comes from Wi-Fi interference or a congested link rather than from your subscription being too small. Buying more speed does nothing about it, which is why upgrades so often disappoint.

Wi-Fi bars are not internet speed

The signal indicator on your device describes the hop between you and the router, and that hop is where most household call problems live. A weak 2.4GHz signal through two walls will ruin a call on a fast connection, while sitting in the same room as the router fixes it for free. Move before you troubleshoot anything else.

Everyone else in the building counts

A console downloading an update, a cloud backup that woke up, or someone streaming in 4K will quietly take the headroom your call needed — a single 4K stream is generally reckoned to want around fifteen megabits on its own, several times what your call is asking for. This is the single most common cause of a call that was fine yesterday and unwatchable today. Pausing one download is usually the whole fix.

Mobile data is fine until the cell is busy

A decent 4G or 5G signal carries a one-to-one video call comfortably, and often beats poor home Wi-Fi. The variables are signal strength, how many other people are on the same mast, and whatever your plan does to you after a certain amount of use. Two bars in a train station car park is not the same product as two bars at home.

The sixty-second test that is actually useful

Run any speed test, but do it on the device you really call from, over the connection you really call on, at the hour you really call. Then read three things: the upload number, the ping and the jitter — most tests show all three if you look past the big download figure. That is a truer picture of your calls than any spec sheet.

The better test: make a short call and watch what breaks first

Symptoms point straight at causes once you know the mapping. Robotic or clipped audio means jitter or loss, a soft blurry picture that sharpens when you sit still means bandwidth, and a clean picture with people constantly interrupting each other means latency. Two minutes of real call tells you more than three speed tests.

What to change when the numbers are thin

In order of effort: move nearer the router or switch to the 5GHz network, plug in a cable if you can, pause backups and downloads, close the twenty tabs playing video in the background, and restart the router if it has been up for months. If nothing helps at 9pm but everything is fine at 11pm, the problem is congestion: moving the call an hour or two beats any amount of tinkering.

The short version to keep in your head

If your upload is above a megabit or two, your ping is under about 150 milliseconds and nothing in the house is downloading, you have everything a two-person call needs and more speed will not improve it. If the call still struggles, the problem is almost always the last few metres — the Wi-Fi hop, the wall between you and the router, or the hour of the evening — rather than the plan you pay for.

Connection problems get blamed on the camera and camera problems get blamed on the connection, so it is worth ruling out the easy one first: a dark picture is lighting, and the fixes are in backlight is turning your face into a silhouette. How much internet speed do I need for a cam call?

Less than most people expect. For a one-to-one video call, roughly one to two megabits per second in each direction is comfortable and around three gives you a sharp picture. The upload number is the one to check, because home connections usually have far less of it than download.

Does upload speed matter more than download for video calls?

They matter equally, but upload is the one people never check and the one that is usually smaller. Your camera feed leaves through the upload lane, so a thin upload means you look bad to them even when they look fine to you. If you only look at one figure, look at that one.

Why is my call blurry when my speed test says the connection is fast?

Because speed is only one of four numbers. A fast line can still have high latency, unstable jitter or packet loss from a weak Wi-Fi hop, and any of those will wreck a call while the speed test looks perfect. Check ping and jitter, and try moving closer to the router before blaming your provider.
